Hi Keith, I wonder if you could help with this problem….. I have a fishing boat with a 6 cylinder old ford dorset turbo diesel engine.
She has been turning over slow in the winter months, and not starting as well as i think she should. We had the injectors looked at and all fuel filters changed, tappets re set but now she turns over much quicker but takes a long while to fire and when she does it shakes and its like it is trying to start but not on all cylinders. After a minute or so, she runs on all cylinders but during this period there is excessive white smoke.
    Could you give your opinion.
    Regards Kevin

      Hi Kevin,
The Dorset is a good engine but is a “old style” engine and does rely
on a good battery and good compression to start.
Something to check is whilst you are trying to start is if there smoke coming out of the exhaust, if so it means that fuel is being injected into the cylinders so the problem must be either, timing or low compression. If the timing was ou,t when hot the engine would not run right so I think that it is a compression problem. My suggestion is to try a conduct a compression test whilst the engine is cold.It should be about 300 to 400 Lbs.

In correct valve setting will also cause a problem with compression when cold.

      Good luck.
      Regards,
      Keith

    Hi Brian,

This is a common problem with these vehicles, the seals on top of the injectors perish and cause air to be drawn into the fuel system back to the filter thus allowing the air to get back into the pump.

You are right that the seals and leak off pipes need replacing. I am able to supply the seals at £ 9.60 plus p&p. I am not sure on what leak off pipe is used but we do sell braided leak off tube, found at
    http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/diesel_engine_products/12/

    I hope that this helps,
    Regards,
    Keith
