Hi Keith,
I have just spoken to a very nice lady in your office regarding a problem I have with my Sprinter, and she said it would be OK to e-mail you regarding this problem and you would probably be able to give me some advice.
I have a 1996 212D Mecedes Sprinter, which has done just over 100,000 miles.
On the first time of taking it out after it being serviced I noticed a problem that it would not pull especially up hills and would not rev up to its maximum revs.
On the level it ran OK but would not go above 60mph.
I took it back to the garage but was told that it would be better for me to take it for a Diagnostic Test to determine the problem.
I took it to a Mercedes Garage for the test and was told it showed a Sticking Injector Needle Sensor, but they could not test the injectors individually because of the age of the vehicle and recommended that I should put an additive in the fuel to see if it cleared. After fve days it cleared and has run perfectly until returning home from Nottingham two days ago. After driving up the A1 for a hundred miles I stopped for a rest for about 30 minutes, and upon starting up the problem returned.
The vehicle does not drive to its maximum revs in any gear.
It does not blow smoke out whilst running.
It starts very well but whilst standing overnight it blows white smoke out for about a minute before clearing.
Once the smoke has cleared it runs OK but will not rev to its Maximum.
I am considering having the injectors taken out and checked. but would appreciate any help you can give pertaining to this problem and what recommendations you have.
Regards
John S

Hi Keith
Thank you for your quick reply.
I have done as you suggested and taken the van back to Mecedes for a complete diagnostic test which covered the fuel system and compression, and the outcome was that the No1 injector needle motion sensor was faulty. One of the mechanics who has worked there for over twenty years stated that he has seen this problem before.
Therefore I would like to ask.
Is this Injector repairable.
Do you Stock New or refurbished items of this nature.
If so how much are they.
If not can you recommend anybody.
The Item is a Bosch No1 Needle Lift/ Needle motion Sensor.
Your help would be most appreciated
Regards
John
Hi John,
Once faulty they do cause the engine to run rough not that I expected this to be your problem. As they are a electrical component with a coil in side when they are faulty they cannot be repaired. Unfortunately they are also very expensive, Bosch have got you, I will get back to you tomorrow with the prices, as we do have a choice of two units but they are not going to be cheap.
Speak tomorrow,
Regards,
Keith
Dear John,
The very nice lady is my wife so thank you. It sounds as though the vehicle has some form of fuel restriction from the tank to the pump. As this engine has a rotary pump it is very important that the fuel supply to the pump is good. I am not sure if you have a lift/supply pump that feeds the rotary pump, perhaps you can find this out and make sure that if it does that it is working ok.
I would question the fuel filter that might have been fitted at your service, perhaps it is has not been fitted correctly or is a inferior product.
Things to check will be,
Fuel filter and housing,
Supply pipes from the tank,
Is there a filter in the tank and if so is it clean,
The tank’s breather system, if this is blocked it will cause a vacum in the fuel supply
At this stage I would not worry about getting the injectors checked, if they were faulty the vehicle will emit black
smoke or would run rough.
The white smoke when cold is a different issue, check the heater plugs, the engine could also be slightly down on compression causing the white smoke when cold.
I hope that this helps, Regards, Keith
