M/Benz CDI engines
Pressure loss within a common rail fuel system can often result in one or more of the following symptoms, hard or difficult starting / erratic or uneven tick over or idle / lumpy running / hesitation on acceleration / smoke on tick over or acceleration / lack of power or even a total shut down of the system. One of the main reasons for pressure loss is due to faulty diesel injectors. To conduct a Common Rail Injector Back Leakage Test go to http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/tips-troubles.php

Hi Alan
Sorry to repeat myself but it is either a pressure loss in the fuel system or a problem with the injector nozzles sticking at low RPM. Try this test first and if the injectors are ok then you need to check the pressure regulating valve on the rail.Failing this you will need to send me your injectors for checking.
Thanks,

Hi Colin,
You can rule out the glow plugs it sounds like a pressure loss in the fuel system. Hi - I have a 2003 Merc C220 CDI. I have 120,000 miles on the clock and the engine is now failing to start unless I use the spray "easy start".
Symptoms are as follows
1. Engine turns but fails to start up.
2. Glow plug lights come on for the usual 3 seconds as normal.
3. After spraying "easy start" engine starts up reasonably easily.
4. Car drives as normal once started with no performance issues and no loss of power.
5. After starting no black smoke is visible but white smoke does seem to emit when engine ticking over.
6. Initially when the problem first occurred the engine would start when the engine was hot but not when it was cold. However the engine will now not start after the engine has been running even after a 50 mile run unless easy start is used again.
I have looked at your diesel engine troubleshooting page and on the face of it it looks like it could be low compression or glow pugs or relay faulty. However does the fact that the engine will not start when hot rule out the glow plugs?
Any advice would be most welcome.
Thanks
Colin
