Dear Keith
How can I thank you enough for such a full and detailed reply.
Based on all this information you have so kindly provided I will now be able to check with the garage exactly what has been done. Thank you once again for all your efforts i would have truly been lost without all this information I now have to hand.
Kind regards
Roy

Dear Roy,
Sorry that I have not commented sooner but I have been away. It all sounds a bit strange especially that replacing injectors should be a straight forward job. The first thing is to establish did they replace the injectors or get your old injectors reconditioned. Either way do the injectors that are now in your engine have the correct nozzles in them and are they set to the correct opening pressure. The nozzles should be a BDN0SPC6209 set to 140 Bar. Next have the injectors been fitted correctly with the corrugated steel washer fitted into the injector seat.
Now that the head has been off there could be a host of problems like pump timing, engine timing and air intake problems. Black smoke is a fuel to air ratio imbalance. I am not sure if your air intake has a butterfly in it to allow vacuum to operate the brakes, this could be causing a problem with intake causing a lack of air into the engine.
Hope that this might help.
Regards,
Keith

My 1982 Landrover Series 3 failed its MOT because the emissions were slightly high. The garage said that this was probably due to the fuel injectors needing replacing. When I called at the garage to collect the vehicle after this work was carried out, they had great difficulty in starting it. They suggested I needed a new battery. After a few yards of driving it, it started to labour and was difficult to get home. It was impossible to restart so I fitted a new battery. However, again, great trouble in starting it, but also thick black smoke coming from the exhaust and very bad misfiring when running. The garage then said that a cylinder gasket had blown and replaced this (they thought that the 3rd cylinder may be misfiring). After some weeks, they phoned me to say that it was ready but then called again very shortly afterwards to stop me from coming to collect it, as exactly the same thing had suddenly happened again, with black smoke and erratic running engine.
Before the fuel injectors were done, it started easily and ran well and there were only a little obvious exhaust emissions on start up, which cleared very soon when driving.
The garage have had the vehicle for 8 weeks now and it still isn’t repaired. They seem at a loss what to do. However, the only work that was done on it was the fuel injectors, so to me, this seems the obvious cause of all of its problems. Do you have any suggestions?
