Uneven running and missing or knocking from a cylinder on a pre common rail system.

Let the engine tick over, crack a injector pipe, one at a time, until diesel comes out, do not let the engine stall, notice the tone of the engine, if it dies slightly that is normal, tighten and try the next one.
If there is no difference in the running of the engine when you loosen a nut that is your problem cylinder. It could be an injector or a cylinder problem.
Change the injector from that cylinder to another good cylinder and see if the trouble follows the injector or stays with the cylinder.

Hi, I wonder if you could point me in the direction of getting to the bottom of my problem with my citroen synergie 2.0 hdi w reg! Have had the problem for a while now! it has black smoke on acceleration, and when first started and idle will rev unevenly! it drives fine its just pulling away really that it smokes fairly bad! It did pass its MOT on saturday, but we was told that the emissions were very high! a diagnostic test was carried out by a friend who had access to 1! And it came back with low pressure fault! Today we had a look at the injectors and there seems to be diesel in the little pocket bits near the injectors! I would like any help you can offer! Please could you describe it in simple terms though as I am a woman and confused rather easily (ha ha) I think I have given you all the information but I will check back in case you need more info
Thank you so much for your time

Dear Steve,
You have not mentioned the mileage but it sounds as though you might have a combination of problems. Also without knowing what engine you have I am unable to help with any diagnostics as the injectors are different on various engines. On the 2.0 Turbo DI X20DTL the injectors fit under the rocker cover/ cam and are more difficult to remove. Also this system is prone to running issues due to a set of seals that fit on top of the injectors, perishing. Also the EGR valve can cause a problem, perhaps see if you can blank it off.
I hope that this helps,
Regards,
Keith

Lack of power and smokey engine

My Vauxhall Astra van (2000, V Reg) has turned very smokey recently, and getting worse. Its a mixture of oil and diesel being burned. I have checked turbo and its working OK. Two of the injectors are leaking with lost of oil around one. Could the smoke and lack of power be down to this? Also if they need changing is it a difficult job, I am fairly OK with minor jobs but have never changed injectors before.
