Escort 1-8 TDI 2000

I have been having a problem recently with white smoke, hesitation and rough idle from cold start until the engine heats up. I was thinking of getting the injectors cleaned. I notice in your advice blog that you advice the use of a sealing device, how much is this to rent or buy. How much are new injectors please?Do you think the injsctors are the problem as i notice that you wrote in another blog that it may be the injector pump timing. Any advice you have would be appreciated. Thanks.Laurence

Dear Murphy,
The TDCI fuel system is very tempremental to any form of fuel contamination and by running the tank low you could have picked up some dirt from the tank. First try replacing the fuel filter. If that does not help you will need to conduct an injector leak back test, you can see how to do this at,
http://www.uniteddiesel.co.uk/tips_docs/Bosch%20common%20rail%20diesel%20injectors%20checking%20back%20leakage.pdf
If you want I can check you injectors but you will need to send them in to me. The cost will be £70.00. Should you take them out mark each injector to the cylinder that it comes out of so that you can return them in the order that they were. This might eliminate the need to recode them.
Good luck,
Regards,
Keith

Is your vehicle a TDCI?, common rail system, does each injector have a wire going to it?

I have a ford focus(2000) 1.8 turbo diesel. It started first time this morning in -3 conditions and I left it to warm up. I proceeded to drive away 15mins later but the engine stalled and will now not restart.I did run out of fuel about two weeks ago but primed the engine.Could this be related.(The tank is currently 1/4 full.)

Hi Laurence,
Firstly I do not believe that you should have an issue of reseating as this does not seem to be a problem with your model of vehicle. You can check if the injectors are leaking by pouring a mixture of soapy water around the injectors whilst the engine is running and check for a formation of bubbles.
Things for you to check are,

• The heater plugs working
• Insure that the fuel supply to the pump is good, no blockages or air ingress.
• Pump timing correct, try advancing slightly.
• Does the pump have a cold start advance unit on it and if so is it working.
• Engine compression low.

At this stage I do not think that by replacing the injectors it will help with this problem. Faulty injectors tend to cause black smoke on acceleration and poor fuel consumption.

Any other queries please come back to me.
Regards,
Keith
